Northwest-Shoals Community College President Humphrey Lee stood Sunday at a podium inside the Lou B. Bevill Fine Arts Center, but he said his feet are planted somewhere else.
“I thank those whose leadership, whose courage, whose tenacity formed the way for what we are doing today,” Lee said during the 50th anniversary celebration of the college and two-year college system in Alabama. “I’m standing on your shoulders.”
In September 1963, 49 students and eight faculty members started class at then-Northwest Alabama State Junior College.
Today, more than 3,900 students attend Northwest-Shoals Community College’s campuses in Phil Campbell and Muscle Shoals. There are 25 community and technical colleges in Alabama.
