ACCS Hosts 1st Annual Alabama Community College System Day

The Alabama Community College System will host its 1st Annual Alabama Community College System Day, in recognition of National Community College Month, on Thursday, April 30, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., in Montgomery. The event will take place on the lawns of the Alabama State Capitol and State Archives and History building.  We expect more than 1,500 students, faculty and staff from across the System to be in attendance. During the program we will hear from students and faculty of the colleges, business and industry representatives, legislators and Dr. Mark Heinrich, Chancellor of the System. Gov. Robert Bentley is scheduled to speak at 11:15 a.m. In addition to the speakers, we will have exhibits showcasing student work including Welding, Healthcare, 3D imaging, Robotics and Culinary Arts. Media are encouraged to attend.

Trenholm State Achieves SACSCOC Accreditation

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Board of Trustees announced on December 9, 2014, in Nashville, Tennessee at the 2014 SACSCOC Annual Meeting that H. Councill Trenholm State Technical College has been granted accreditation.  SACSCOC is the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Latin America and other international sites that award associate or higher degrees.

Statement from the Alabama Community College System on the passing of Dr. Judy M. Merritt

Alabama Community College System employees mourn the loss of Dr. Judy M. Merritt who passed away on Sunday, Oct 19.  Dr. Merritt was the longstanding president of Jefferson State Community College. She retired from that position in June of this year.

GSCC students win at SkillsUSA conference

Gadsden State Community College students earned five gold medals, seven silver medals and one bronze medal during the 2014 Alabama SkillsUSA Leadership Conference, Career Expo and State Championships recently in Birmingham.

Students competed in more than 80 categories during the two-day event, including carpentry, precision machining, electrical wiring, architectural drafting, automotive refinishing and welding.

Curry is LBWCC ‘outstanding alumna’

LBW Community College will recognize Jennifer Carroll Curry of Andalusia as the 2014 Outstanding Alumna during the College’s commencement ceremony in May.

“We are thrilled to recognize Ms. Curry for her many accomplishments and commitment to serve her community and LBW,” said LBWCC President Dr. Herb Riedel.

Curry completed an Associate Degree at LBWCC in 1997 and transferred to Auburn University where she completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance in 1999. In addition, she received a Master of Science Degree in Management from Faulkner University in 2001, and a banking degree from the University of South Alabama in 2004. She currently serves as vice-president of lending at CCB Community Bank in Andalusia.

Two Gadsden State students receive All-Alabama Academic Team honors

Two students were selected to represent Gadsden State Community College as members of the All-Alabama Academic Team.

Andrew McMillan of Southside and Trois White of Boaz will be honored at a dinner in Montgomery, where they will be recognized by the Alabama Community College System and receive $1,000 academic scholarships from the All-USA Academic Program. Both students have volunteered their time participating in various campus and community functions.
