Accommodations are available upon request for candidates who have a disability that
requires a change to the usual way testing is done. Request for Testing Accommodation
forms may be obtained by the candidate from the local official GED Test Center or
can be downloaded (select from Forms List below). Accommodations may be approved for
the following disabilities: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder; Emotional/Psychological/Psychiatric Disability; Learning
and Other Cognitive Disabilities; and Physical/Chronic Health Disabilities. Accommodations such as extended time testing, a
private room, supervised breaks or other accommodations may be approved depending on the specific type of disability.
Candidates should discuss their accommodation request with the GED Chief Examiner at the GED test center where they plan to test to ensure
proper processing of the request. The GED Chief Examiner can explain how to properly process accommodation requests, what
documentation is required, and how the approval process works.
The GED candidate will need to submit one original Request for Testing Accommodations
to the GED Chief Examiner at the local testing center with all the necessary documentation.
The documentation should be comprehensive and must indicate how the disability substantially
limits some major life activity such as seeing, hearing or learning. Once the accommodation request is submitted to the GED
Chief Examiner, the Chief Examiner will review the request for proper documentation, complete the Chief Examiner's portion of the
form, and then will submit the request to the state GED office for approval consideration. All accommodation requests must be
submitted through the GED Chief Examiner to the state GED office. Each request requires approval by either the state GED office
or in some cases by the GED Testing Service (national office) in Washington D.C., depending on the nature of request. The state
GED Administrator will inform the GED Chief Examiner of the approval decision in writing. Once the request is submitted to the
state GED office, the approval decision is normally completed within 30 days. Candidates desiring to test with accommodations
should not schedule their test date until an approval decision is received by the local testing center.
